Services & Practice Philosophy

Dr. Chiu’s practice uses the Biopsychosocial Model, which means the whole person is taken into context when formulating a diagnosis and treatment plan. Biological factors like physical illness, vitamin deficiencies, and hormone imbalances can create patterns which mimic psychiatric conditions. Don’t be surprised when your weight and your blood pressure are taken! Psychological factors, a person’s beliefs, thoughts, and feelings are also taken into account in a non-judgmental way. The social component includes support networks and also causes of stress such as job conditions and caregiving responsibilities.

Dr. Chiu has experience helping patients with mood disorders (depression and bipolar disorder), obsessive compulsive disorder, and other anxiety disorders (panic disorder, specific phobias). She has treated folks with adult ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), schizophrenia, and eating disorders in a team-based setting, but no longer has the staffing to meet the complex needs of these patients. She does not handle forensic or disability evaluations. If you have a condition that is not listed here, please use the contact form or call.

Some patients will not have a formal diagnosis. Worrying a lot or having some insomnia? Perhaps you are going through a life change and need extra support. Or you’re unhappy with your current situation, but uncertain on how to improve things. Dr. Chiu is interested in mindfulness and how it can improve focus and decrease stress/anxiety in today’s hectic lifestyles.

Depending on your condition, you might be offered a choice of medication, therapy, or a combination of both.
